British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
