The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
