The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
